Pipavav Port

1] GENERAL INFORMATION

The PORT PIPAVAV in latitude 20 54 N 071 30 E (on Indian Hydrographic . Charts 2100,BA Chart No. 1486 edition 2006) was inaugurated in 1997 as a joint venture with the State of Gujarat. Having been constructed to serve the rich hinterland of South Saurashtra (140 km SW of Bhavnagar / Alang ship breaking yard) and as a container terminal and good place of refuge on the West Coast of India bordering Arabian Sea.

1.1 PORT LIMITS

The port facilities are within the Port of Pipavav under the jurisdiction of the Gujarat Maritime Board. Notified boundaries are: with in latitude 20 STN 07134E, 2056N, 07128E, 2054N, 07128E, 2053N, 07132E.

Gazette notification G/PT/11/94/IPA/1393-100(1)/GM, dated 8.12.1994, readwith IV Act 1917 as amended 2005.

1.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE BERTHS

The present berths facing the island of Sial Bet lie in line 050-230 and are numbered 1 to 4 and designed to accommodate container vessels of up to LOA 305 mtrs, draft 14.0 mtrs., bulk carriers of up to LOA 240 mtrs, draft 13.0 mtrs. (at HW ) and small LPG Tankers. Max. Cargo 10,000t.

Berths are situated 3.5 kilometers from the main gate connected by a private road providing vehicular access to them.

2] BERTHS AND PILOTAGE

Berth Available :

  • Port has 4 berth's.
  • Berth 1-3 are dedicated for Bulk / B Bulk.
  • Berth 4 is for Container.
  • B -1 is a mechanized Berth with Shore Crane and Conveyor system for Coal.

Discharge:

However, Coal operation can be done at other 2 berth's, using vessel crane.

LPG JETTY

** For LPG berth, Min. Length of parallel body 47 M. Berthing / unberthing in day light hours only. No double banking.

ULTRATECH JETTY

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels calling port of Pipavav.

The licensed pilot will board 2-3 cables SSW of the fairway buoy using pilot boat or a port tug.

Vessels proceeding to anchorage should approach Savaibet lighthouse from southerly direction. Tidal streams south of Shiyalbet and Savaibet flow 070 – 250 with a rate 3 to 4 knots.

Inside the Port tidal stream flow along the jetty in a NE - SW direction with a rate upto 3 knots.

Channel depth 14.5 Mtrs. Turning basin depth 13.5 Mtrs.

GPPL jetty basin depth 13.5 Mtrs at berth 1,2,3 and 15.5 Mtrs at Berth 4 & LPG.

Strong sets will be experienced at entrance to the channel. Mariners are cautioned not to attempt entering the channel without a licensed Pilot on board.

BERTHING CONDITIONS

Vessels will berth any time depending on size and draft. For deep draft vessels pilot boarding is planned to commence at the top of the tide.

ULTRATECH JETTY

The port has employed two rail mounted Electric Level Luffing (ELL) cranes from B M Titan of Belgium.

The rated handling capacity of this conveyor system is 2,000 MTs per hour.

This conveyor unloader system is served thru 4 hoppers by these 2 shore cranes of 40 mt capacity n 12 cbm grabs n used for the gearless vessels.

For the geared vessels they use this system by using 2 / 3 ship cranes/grabs to discharge into 2/3 hoppers with a combination of 1 shore crane into the 4th hopper.

Should recheck n cnfm with receivers to ensure the receivers requisition fr the shore facility in advance.

The disrate achieved is ard 15-20000 mt/day with 2 shore cranes/grabs.

The vessels cranes should have sufficient outreach [Min 8.5 mtrs from ships rails.

The maximum capacity of BM Titans is 26 Tonnes in Grab Mode.


The maximum capacity of Gottwald is 32 tonnes in Grab mode and for heavy lift operation, the maximum capacity is 100 Tonnes.

The density of the seawater here is approximately 1024 but may reduce up to 1020 during monsoon.
